No one can help with the time difference, but at least Facebook Portal can help you feel like you’re in the same room together.
Facebook Portal is basically a family of smart-speaker devices with HD screens. There’s the 8” Portal Mini ($129), the 10” Portal ($179), the 15.6” Portal Plus ($279) and the Portal TV ($149), a camera accessory that works with your TV. All devices use Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp to optimize video calls on a bigger screen than your phone. The person you’re calling doesn’t need a Portal device to answer a video call from you as long as they have Messenger or WhatsApp, but since you can get two Portal devices and save $50, why not get one for yourself and have one shipped to them?
Larger screens aren’t the only perk bringing you closer together. Portal’s smart cameras use AI to “follow” people’s movements within a 140-degree field. So when your love is dashing around looking for their keys, you kind of feel like you’re there.
The smart camera also widens as more people come into view. This is a good perk for long-distance families — oh, and so is the AR storytelling feature that gives you werewolf faces.
Portal also comes with Alexa built in, so you can tell it to stream music, turn up the thermostat and watch videos from partners like Facebook Watch.
So after that 2:00 a.m. call, tell it to turn off the lights and hit the hay.
