An opening reception for “Obras de Luz: Works of Light,” a 40-year history of the Japanese American community through the lens of photojournalist Mario Gershom Reyes, was held on Dec. 6 at the Japanese American National Museum.
The museum’s Aratani Central Hall was filled with the former Rafu Shimpophoto editor’s friends and admirers, but Reyes himself was unable to attend due to illness. His niece, Nicole, spoke on his behalf. “He really was hoping to be here … He’s extremely excited and happy and grateful,” she said.
William Fujioka, chair of the JANM Board of Trustees, spoke on behalf of the museum. Filmmaker Steve Nagano introduced his 2012 documentary “More Than 1,000 Words,” in which Reyes discusses how he became a part of the Japanese American community through his photography.
Former Rafu editor Gwen Muranaka was unable to attend but left a video message in which she fondly recalled the many years they worked together.
The exhibit, which spans community events, political activism, sports, celebrities and more, will be on view until Sunday, Jan. 5.
